Definition
AI Recommendation Eligibility is the binary state of whether a store has met the minimum requirements to enter AI recommendation flows. It is not a score or a ranking. It is a gate. A store that fails the AI Trust Layer, has no structured data, or is blocked to AI crawlers is ineligible for recommendation regardless of product quality, brand recognition, or marketing spend.

Why AI Cares
Recommendation is not a spectrum for every store. For stores below the minimum threshold, it is binary: you are either in the recommendation pool or you are not. Eligibility must be established before any optimization is meaningful.
Example

Example
A store with no schema markup, JavaScript-rendered prices, a robots.txt that blocks GPTBot, and zero external mentions is ineligible for AI recommendations. No amount of content optimization changes that until the eligibility blockers are removed first.
The Candidate Set
Every AI answer starts as a crowd.
Before AI ranks anything, it has a pool of candidates: every store that could plausibly match the query. Most of that pool never makes it to ranking. Only stores that clear every gate stay in the set that gets ordered.
12,482 candidate stores for a single buyer query. Illustrative sample, not to scale. Only 24 cleared every gate.
The Four Gates
Eligibility is four checks, not one.
An AI agent runs a store through a short sequence of questions before it ever considers ranking it. Tap or hover each gate to see what it actually checks.
GATE 01
✓
Readable
What it checks
Content is server-rendered and extractable, not locked behind scripts.
GATE 02
✓
Verifiable
What it checks
Trust is machine-readable: rating schema, return policy, real identity.
GATE 03
✓
Understood
What it checks
Structured data states product, price, and availability as facts.
GATE 04
✓
Relevant
What it checks
Positioning is specific enough to map to a real buyer intent.
The Door
Flip a switch. Watch the door.
A store's eligibility is not a percentage, it is a lock. Turn any gate off below and watch what happens to the door. All four have to stay on for the door to open.

All four gates pass. The store enters the ranking pool.
The Eligibility Funnel
Each gate removes a layer.
The candidate pool shrinks at every gate. By the time a store reaches the ranking stage, it has already survived four separate filters.

The One Broken Gate
Three out of four gates pass. Still ineligible.
Eligibility is not an average. A store does not become mostly eligible by passing most of the gates. One failed gate is enough to exclude it entirely. Click the failing gate to fix it and watch the verdict change.

Before / After
Same store, four fixes later.
Eligibility blockers are usually structural, not stylistic. Fixing them does not require a rebrand, it requires making the existing store legible to a machine.
Before
✗Prices render only after JavaScript executes
✗No review schema, no return policy page
✗Generic homepage copy, no clear product category
✗robots.txt blocks known AI crawlers
Verdict: Ineligible
After
✓Prices present in the raw server-rendered HTML
✓Review schema, return policy, and business identity all present
✓Product, category, and audience stated in plain text
✓AI crawlers explicitly allowed in robots.txt
Verdict: Eligible
Below the threshold
0%
An ineligible store has zero chance of being recommended, regardless of price, reviews, or brand recognition. It is not in the set being ranked.
Above the threshold
>0%
An eligible store enters the ranking pool. Where it lands from there depends on its full AI Commerce Score, not on eligibility alone.

FAQ
Questions about AI Recommendation Eligibility
What is AI Recommendation Eligibility?
It is the threshold a store must clear before an AI agent will even consider recommending it. Recommendation is a two-stage process: first the agent filters stores down to those eligible, then it ranks the eligible ones. If you are below the eligibility line you are not ranked low, you are excluded entirely and never appear.
How is eligibility different from ranking?
Eligibility is a gate, ranking is an order. Eligibility decides whether you make it into the consideration set at all. Ranking then decides where you sit among the stores that qualified. Optimizing your ranking is pointless if you have not first cleared eligibility, because you are not yet in the set being ranked.
What does a store need to become eligible?
At minimum an AI agent needs to read your content, verify you are trustworthy, confirm what you sell, and match you to the buyer intent. These map to the readability, trust, structured-signal, and relevance factors in the AI Commerce Score. A store that is readable but unverifiable, or trustworthy but irrelevant to the query, stays below the threshold.
How do I know which gate is failing?
A free AI Commerce Score breaks your store into factors and shows the lowest one. Because eligibility is set by your weakest gate, that lowest factor is almost always what is keeping you out of recommendations, and it is where to start.
